Flat out round Sandpiper Cay in a sand buggy, against seven rivals who race for real. Packed sand is fast, soft sand is slow, the dunes throw you into the air, and the pack fans out into every corner.

Everything you see and hear is made in code as the game loads: the island, the sea and sky, the buggies, the crowd, the sound and the music. There are no image or sound files at all, and the game never goes online once it has loaded.

THREE TRACKS ON ONE ISLAND

- Shoreline Sprint: flat out along the south beach, through the palms and across the lagoon ford

- Dune Sea: big crests, blind landings and a sandy S through the heart of the dunes

- Lighthouse Run: round the rocky hill, past the lighthouse on the cape and back through the jungle

HOW YOU PLAY

- Race: one race against seven rivals. Pick the track, the laps (2, 3 or 5) and how hard they drive.

- Sandpiper Cup: three rounds, one on each track, with points for every place. Finish it to unlock the Dune Wolf.

- Time trial: three laps alone against the clock and a ghost of your best lap, with gold, silver and bronze times.

- Garage: three buggies with their own handling, and eight liveries. Win a race to unlock the Scarab.

- First time in, three short cards and a coached practice lap teach you the skills: accelerate, steer, grab a turbo can, boost, drift, get some air, finish.

THE BUGGIES

- Sandhopper: a classic fibreglass tub with the engine out in the open. Where everyone starts.

- Scarab: a bare tube sand rail with fat paddle tyres. Turns on a coin, leaps off the line.

- Dune Wolf: a long-travel trophy buggy with a roof and a light bar. Heavy and very fast.

HOW IT DRIVES

- The body sits on real springs: it squats when you floor it, dives under the brakes, leans out of a corner, shudders over soft sand and lands from a jump with a thump.

- Flick the handbrake into a corner to drift. Steer into a slide and the rear bites again.

- Drifts and jumps fill the boost meter, and so do the glowing turbo cans laid round every lap.

- The rivals take racing lines, pull out to pass, give you room alongside, drift the hairpins and go for the cans when their boost is low.

- Buggies are solid: a shove on the grid, a T-bone or a rub down the side all push back where the bodywork really is.

- Six cameras: chase, far chase, nose, cockpit, bumper and TV. A sweep over the grid before the lights, and a slow-motion replay of the whole race under the confetti.
