Five islands, a working airstrip and whatever the weather is doing. Take off, thread the rings and bring her back down on the strip in one piece. Cloudbreak is an arcade flight game that runs right here in your browser: easy to pick up, with a real takeoff, stall and landing to master.

Three ways to fly

  • Missions: twelve jobs around the island chain. Run freight home on the runway lights after dark, glide back with a dead engine, stay under an 80 m ceiling down the coast, or set the amphibian down in the bay. Each one you finish opens the next, and four of them hand you a new aircraft. Gold, silver and bronze are awarded against par.
  • Time trial: fourteen rings and a landing, against the clock. Ratings run from S to C.
  • Free flight: no clock and no rings. Pick the hour, the weather and the aeroplane, and go and look at it.

Five aircraft

  • Skylark SX: honest, forgiving sport monoplane. Where everyone starts.
  • Vireo R-7: clipped-wing air racer with a huge radial. Rolls like a thought.
  • Comet J-2: jet trainer and the fastest thing here. Wants a long runway and wide turns.
  • Tern A-4: slow, steady amphibian, and the only one that lands on water.
  • Atlas C-9: twin-engine light freighter with a high wing. Unflappable.

Weather you can feel

Six times of day, from dawn to a moonlit night, and eight kinds of weather: clear, scattered, broken, overcast, rain, thunderstorm, sea mist and snow squall. The weather is more than a filter. It moves the wind and turbulence the aircraft actually feels, roughens the sea, changes how far you can see, and in a storm it throws lightning and thunder at you.

Controls

Your first takeoff

  1. Hold Shift to open the throttle.
  2. At about 90 kt, ease back on S to lift off.
  3. Keep your speed up, or the nose drops in a stall.
  4. Bank toward the gold marker and fly through each ring.
  5. To land, line up with the runway, ease the power off, descend gently, level the wings and brake with Space.

Good to know

  • Nothing to download and no account needed. Your logbook, medals and unlocked aircraft are saved in your browser.
  • No ads, no analytics and no tracking.
  • Everything in the game is generated in code: the terrain, the aircraft, the textures, the weather, the sound and the music. It loads no external art or audio files.
  • Built with three.js. Best in a recent version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.

When I switch off shadows in the settings (in the browser version), the whole gamescreen disappears, apart from the HUD. So there is no plane to see anymore, and no landscape or skies. It's just a blue screen.

Thanks for reporting this. Turning off shadows should not make the game scene disappear. Could you tell us which browser and device you’re using, and whether switching shadows back on restores the scene? A screenshot would also help us investigate the blue screen.

My fault. It turns out it was a browser plugin I was using. Now the game works as it should. Sorry!

No worries - enjoy the game.
